Mr. Ripley began training in TaeKwon-Do under Mr. David McKenna (6th Degree black belt) in 1984, continuing only for a short time (9 months) before putting his training on the back burner for a busy family and work schedule. In Oct. 1997 after a long absence he returned to the Art of TaeKwon-Do in pursuit of a greater frame of mind and physical conditioning.
Mr. Ripley was never one to rush through a belt level, training as often as possible to be the best he could be before moving on to the next belt. He earned his 1st Degree Black belt on 1 Oct 2001, his 2nd Degree on 28 Sept 2003, his 3rd Degree on 4 Aug 2006, and his 4th Degree on 12 June 2009. This latest belt level test being presided over by Master Pierre Lequarre (8th Dan), Mr. David McKenna (6th Dan), and Mr. Ken MacKenzie (5th Dan).
Mr. Ripley started competing in Feb. 1998 and has competed in virtually every competition available to him since that time. He has had a very successful career, receiving medals in every competition and in 2001 he became the Eastern Canadian and National ITF champion in sparring. Mr. Ripley has held the Eastern Canadian championship title 7 times since that time.
Mr. Ripley’s career as an instructor began at Mr. McKenna’s schools in Eastern Passage, Westphal, the main school in Dartmouth, NS. In Nov. 2002 Mr. Ripley opened JC’s TaeKwon-Do in Amherst, NS under the guidance of Mr. McKenna and since its opening the school has grown to become one of the most respected and successful schools in Eastern Canada.
